The Full Story
To be honest, the naming of the company was the last thing on my mind. Before even brainstorming names, brands, URLs, etc., my only focus was on creating a good jump rope. Once I had a prototype I loved, the naming came into play.
One morning when getting ready for work I asked my wife what we should name the company. As she was making lunch and including her daily snack of blueberries, she said, "How about blueberry jump ropes?" I loved it! It was fun and creative, so we created a simple logo based off of that name- the letter B with a small round-edged star, which actually resembles the top of a blueberry.
When designing the case for the rope we had a mold created that would emboss the logo. We were waiting for the cases to be finished and kept contemplating the name. At one point I thought maybe Poison berry would be more catchy, and I thought it was cool that the acronym was PBJ. While in a state of indecision, I started calling it "star-B," basically just describing the logo.
I've always preferred short URLs. I feel they are simpler and cleaner. One silly hangup was that I didn't want a long URL like blueberryjumpropes.com or poisenberryjumpropes.com. It just felt awkward for some reason...made me want to go wash my hands lol. I wanted the URL short and simple. One afternoon while daydreaming it somehow popped into my mind- I wonder if starby.com is registered. Sure enough it was. However, this turned out to actually be a good thing because it lead to a more creative name that is unique. I then searched starbii.com and woohoo! It was available.
That night I asked my wife what she thought of the name and... She liked it! So I hopped on my computer and registered the domain. I couldn't be happier with the name. It's not uber-aggressive or rugged by any means. It's clean, simple and unique just like our product.
